The Risk of Faith: A Lenten Journey with Soren Kierkegaard
Luke Grote, PhD will lead a thought-provoking Lenten series starting this Friday exploring the penetrating insights of Soren Kierkegaard, one of the most influential Christian thinkers since the Reformation. Over the course of three Fridays, participants will engage with Kierkegaard’s reflections on faith, despair, and the challenge of belief.
March 21 – Fear and Trembling
What does it mean to take a leap of faith? Through Kierkegaard’s reading of Abraham, we will examine the distinction between the ethical and the religious, the sacrifice faith requires, and the paradoxical expectation of its return.
March 28 – The Sickness unto Death
Kierkegaard defines despair not as mere sadness but as a failure to be truly oneself, rooted in God. This session will explore how despair can coexist with happiness and what it means for the spiritual life.
April 4 – Philosophical Fragments
How does Christian faith differ from Platonic recollection? We will contrast these perspectives while considering Kierkegaard’s concept of offense—the stumbling block of the gospel that is inextricably linked to faith.
